The Institute of Linguistics of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (IL-CASS, formerly known as the Institute of Linguistics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences) was established in June 1950 as one of the first research institutes in the field of philosophy and social sciences since the Chinese Academy of Sciences had been founded. The Institute of Linguistics has been affiliated to the newly established CASS since 1977. The previous directors of the Institute of Linguistics, in chronological order, are Luo Changpei, Lü Shuxiang, Li Rong, Liu Jian, Jiang Lansheng, Shen Jiaxuan, and Liu Danqing. The present leadership of IL-CASS consists of Secretary of CPC Committee Yu Xinhua, Director Zhang Bojiang, Secretary of Discipline Inspection Committee and Deputy Director Li Aijun, Deputy Director Bai Xiaoli.
The general task of research undertaken by IL-CASS for the time being is to conduct the studies of the history, evolution, and the present scenario of the Chinese Language. Major research practices include the basic inquiries and theoretical explorations into various sub-disciplines of linguistics such as phonetics, phonology, semantics, syntax, lexicology, and philology, as well as applied linguistic studies especially of corpus linguistics, psycholinguistics, lexicography and language acquisition, etc.
IL-CASS is also responsible for the preparation and revision of Xinhua Dictionary which is the first modern Chinese dictionary since the founding of New China, and Modern Chinese Dictionary which is China’s first standardized dictionary of modern Chinese/Mandarin.

IL-CASS now comprises 11 units, namely Office of Chinese Syntax and Semantics, Office of Historical Linguistics I, Office of Historical Linguistics II, Office of Chinese Dialectology, Editorial Office of Studies of the Chinese Language, Editorial Office of Contemporary Linguistics, Laboratory of Phonetics and Speech Science, Office of Lexicography, Editorial office of Xinhua Dictionary, Office of Innovative Lexicology and Lexicography, Office of Corpus Linguistics.
IL-CASS consists of two functional departments, namely Comprehensive Administration Office and Research & Graduate Management Administration Office.
IL-CASS has two non-entity research centers, namely CASS Research Center for Lexicology & Lexicography, and Corpus and Computational Linguisitics Center, IL,-CASS.
IL-CASS is responsible for three academic journals: Studies of the Chinese Languages (bimonthly, 1952 founded), Dialect (quarterly, 1979 founded), and Contemporary Linguistics (bimonthly, 1961 founded, formerly known as Linguistics Resources, Trends in Linguistics and Linguistics Abroad, respectively). IL-CASS also sponsors several kinds of volumes in Chinese Studies: Historical Linguistics, Grammatical Studies and Explorations, Ancient Chinese Studies, Interactional Linguistics and Chinese Language Studies, Dialect Grammar Series and Volume of Linguistic Typology, etc.
IL-CASS has two academic affiliations — Chinese Language Society and Chinese Dialect Society. They are responsible for the edition of Journal of Chinese Linguistics (society journal of CLS), Journal of Chinese Dialectology (society journal of CDS) and Journal of Chinese Phonetics (journal of phonetics division of CLS). The Department of Lexicography and the Center for Lexicography and Research are the director units of Chinese Dictionary Committee of China Association for Lexicography.
IL-CASS has undertaken extensive teaching responsibilities and graduate management service at the college of humanities of University of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, the college is now led by Zhang Bojiang.
IL-CASS offers two authorized majors under the first-level discipline of Chinese Language and Literature — Chinese Philology and Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, leading to the Master of Arts (M.A.), and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees.
IL-CASS possesses postdoctoral stations in Chinese Philology and Linguistics and Applied Linguistics and recruits both state-funded postdoctoral fellows and project-funded postdoctoral fellows.
