Fāngyán, also known as Dialect《方言》, is the only professional periodical in the field of Chinese dialect fieldwork and research of the world. Sponsored by the Institute of Linguistics, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, it started publication in 1979 and publishes fieldwork investigation reports, theses on research methods and theories of Chinese dialects. It emphasizes the importance of the fieldwork investigation and the fresh research ideas, formulates a set of academic norms and an academic system.

Fāngyán is quarterly published and all papers are under double-blind peer review. English titles and abstracts are attached for every paper since the year of 2000. Fāngyán was published by the Commercial Press from its first issue in 1979 to 2013 and is published by the Social Sciences Academic Press (China) since 2014. The electronic version is copyrighted by the www.cnki. net and the National Center for Philosophy and Social Sciences Documentation (www.nssd. org).

Professor LI rong, XIONG Zhenghui, HE Wei, ZHANG Zhenxing, MAI Yun and SHEN Ming are chief editors successively.
